At the Other End of Downtown

I walked down Columbia Street this morning to check the thrift shop inventory. The trip proved successful; I returned via the SkyTrain with a colourful, short-sleeved summer shirt to handle the coming seasonal heat.  On the way out of the shop, I stopped to take a photo of our part of New Westminster. The view, not far from the corner of Begbie and Columbia, presents a jarring contrast in architecture.

Downtown New West
On the far right stands the Westminster Trust Building at 713 Columbia. Constructed between 1911 and 1912, it was the city’s first skyscraper. The Chicago School design features cream-coloured terra cotta and red brick. The pre-war economy was booming enough that the developers added two extra floors to the original six-story plan before breaking ground. It originally offered steam heating, a fireproof steel vault, and electric elevators! The penthouse served as the Westminster Club for nearly a century before closing its doors around 2013.

Standing right next to that early twentieth-century masonry is the Anvil Centre at 777 Columbia. Jay and I have lived along this section of the Fraser River long enough to remember what sat there previously: a sloped, faded section of retail on the old Golden Mile. Completed in the fall of 2014, the new building relies heavily on glass, steel, and limestone. It contains an 84,000-square-foot civic podium that supports a nine-storey, 137,000-square-foot office tower. The architects included some black brick as a token nod to the older red brick next door. It now holds a 364-seat theatre and the local museum; everything radiates from a large 60-foot open atrium.

A full century of civic ambition sits awkwardly but proudly in this single shot. You can appreciate the modern glass and the historic terra cotta all at once, provided you do not get hit by traffic while standing in the middle of the street to get a decent photo.

Blue Sky, Brown Shirt

Downtown Walk: Thrift Store

Downtown Walk: Thrift Store

A whole skyfull of great blue colour has arrived!  Mark the calendar.  It's still cool but so worth it to walk in bright sunshine.  I walked to the other end of the New West downtown.  Things are so different than when we first walked these streets.

However, one building that has been open in its present location for decades is the Thrift Shop.  It was once part of an old structure that was incorporated into the New Westminster SkyTrain Station after we moved nearby in 1996.   For decades now the Thrift Shop has been in the historic BC Electric Railway building built in 1910-11.

Downtown Walk: Thrift Store

It is a favourite place of mine.  I like going in often seeing what is currently in the racks and on the shelves.  I didn't get a robo-dog but bought an unused shirt with a Malaysian design.  The label reads, Singapore Exclusive Collection.  I paid about US $5 for it.

New West Pride Festival 2024

New West Pride Street Party

New West Pride Street Party

I love when the Pride Party shuts down Columbia Street on a Saturday in August.  The street is the major thoroughfare in downtown New Westminster, BC.  Our apartment is set back on the hill directly in front of all the activities. It was scheduled from 3:00 till 8:00 pm today.  A local newspaper reported the attendance was expected to be around 40,000 during the entire event.

We walked down the street and back several times this afternoon.

New West Pride Street Party

There were several stages with various performers.  We stayed until the end of CLEAN, SOBER, & PROUD by the drag performers at an amazing stage in front of the Anvil Community Centre.  The top-notch show is hosted in a substance-free space for everybody and for those in recovery, recovery allies, and sober curious people to celebrate pride together.

Seeing Our Doctor is Easy

Our family doctor works three days a week in the clinic across the street. It's now easy to book online for a telephone or physical visit with him.  We got back a few months ago, so today I had an appointment to renew prescriptions and ask a few questions.

Our former doctor retired but one benefit was he was almost as old as us and knew firsthand some common aspects of aging.  Now, we have Dr. Huang who's probably around 30-years-old.  What he lacks in experience, he makes up for with the newest medical knowledge and opinions.
From the Window in My Health Clinic

This is the view from the window in the office reception area.  It looks toward Columbia Street.  Our building is directly behind access to the Columbia SkyTrain Station.  In fact, from the clinic, the clock you can see is probably where our balcony would be.  We're on the 10th floor. This shows how easy it is for Jay or me to visit our family doctor.

Downtown New West's Car Free Day

New West Car Free Day   New West Car Free Day

New West Car Free Day

I like any excuse to close Columbia Street.  It's a major artery for travellers from our area because New Westminster occupies a central location in the Metro-Vancouver region.  During summers, it's nice to take back the street as pedestrians.

I guess this is the second annual Car Free Day here.  I don't remember where we were when it was held last year.  However, we do have an annual New West Pride Street Fest in a few weeks.  I'd like to encourage Saturday closures for the whole summer!

It was fun to walk out of our building through the SkyTrain station and onto the sidewalk today.

New West Pride 2022 Street Festival

The new, progress-gay flag arrived in an Amazon package in the nick of time.   I taped it to the balcony glass so all the folks down on Columbia Street could see.

Things were scheduled to start at 3 PM.  It's okay as that is when the sun finally started to shine and people arrive.  I love that our city is willing and able to completely shut down Columbia Street in downtown New Westminster, BC. Downtown's main drag is much more interesting when it is filled with people rather than traffic.

Rolling Back Towards Normal

Things seem to be slowly going back to normal.  Over the last 24 hours, British Columbia had only one new confirmed case of COVID-19 and one death in a population of over five million. The streets appeared busier today with more shops opening along Columbia.

Thrift Shop

In all honesty, the fact the Thrift Shop opened today made me happier than most other businesses.  It is big.  As the heritage building is at the other end of downtown, it makes a perfect little walk. I stop there frequently just to see what's new.

A&N Hosts Its Final Sale

This morning, because we didn't have any errands, we did a few kilometers by crossing the road and walking in Westminster Pier Park. We also got a closer look at the queue trying to get into the Army & Navy Department Store. From our balcony, we had been viewing lots of people waiting early on this morning. The lineup continued throughout the entire workday.
  End of an Era

The landmark New Westminster branch of this store has been in our city for a long time. In fact, the company celebrated its centennial last year.

We probably made purchases in the former Eaton's building on Columbia Street soon after arriving in Canada in 1996. Over the years we'd been loyal customers because of its convenient location just across the road from us.   Recently, we'd noticed the choice of merchandise was diminishing and the service going downhill. In fact, when we left for the winter we joked that it might not be around when we got back.

The five stores in BC and Alberta had a hard time competing with the switch to online marketplaces such as Amazon. The COVID-19 situation simply broke Army & Navy's back as well as spirit. All the BC inventory will be liquidated at the New Westminster location over the next few weeks.

Drone On

Then, Turn Right onto Front Street

Is Dennis droning on about the weather again?

Not really. Two of today's pictures do somehow showcase the sort of ugly weather we're having. There's also daily rain in the forecast for the rest of the week, I think. So, maybe I am a little. Can one drone on briefly?

No Takers

I didn't see anyone waiting to sit in the sidewalk tables. So perhaps this has put me into the mood for our winter travel. This is the middle of October after all, and we do leave before the end of it. Okay. I admit this entry did nothing but drone on a little.

Old Fits into the Mix

I really like my little city of New Westminster, BC. It is an exciting mix of buildings over a hundred years old, buildings strikingly new, and many still under construction. These two buildings remain relatively unchanged and sit right along Columbia Street, downtown's main drag.

Not Much to Track

Today was pleasant enough although I didn't accomplish many amazing things. I can definitely live with that.

My Mi band shows just 6701 steps at the moment. It says that so far today I've walked a mere 4.4 kilometers which is distance enough to have burned only 362 extra calories. That is okay too.

Columbia

I did walk down to Hyack Square via the Westminster Pier Park and back by the way of Columbia Street. That accounts for nearly half my totals. I love my day's modest activity and my little city of New Westminster, BC.

Old Post Office Bldg

Beauty can be 20 feet from one's front door. One just needs to take the time to look around for it.

That's why I deliberately purchased a small camera. I didn't want it sitting on a shelf. My little Nikon fits in a mini-case over my shoulder almost every time I leave the apartment. I hang it on the door knob to ensure I don't forget it.

Umbrellas

When I have a camera, I'm much more likely to look around. When I focus on the visual aspects of my surroundings, I often find beauty.

Staying in Character

I noticed that the new development in New Westminster, BC is nearing completion.

I would like to say that the Trapp+Holbrook fits into our downtown quite well. It must have cost a bit of extra cash to save the facade of the old Trapp block. I saw that it was dismantled piece by piece. Some of the construction fencing has been taken so it's pretty easy to get a good glimpse now. I like how it keeps the street level in character while letting the building rise. Nice job!

Monday Quay Stroll

Now I can't help but look at the lifeless, sterile angles of the Anvil Centre and sort of wonder if it will ever look like it belongs in our downtown. There is never any colour nor activity along that glass stretch of Columbia Street. The wide sidewalk is nice but seemingly always barren.

New West Pride's Columbia Street Party

#NewWest PrideNew Westminster sits plumb in the middle of the Metro-Vancouver region. This means most everybody needs to commute through us every day. Downtown's main drag is called Columbia Street. Today it was closed between 3:00 and, just now, 8:00 PM.

I loved having one of New West's 2014 Pride activities occur right between 4th and 6th Streets. This stretch is right along the blocks in front of where we live. We had beer gardens, booths, and a stage with entertainment. It was crowded and great.

If only we could have events which close Columbia Street every summer Saturday!

Low on Gumption

The weather is a bit overcast, but nice. It is warm outside and everything is very green. My only trip out of the apartment, so far, has been to cross the street to the department store. I didn't buy anything.

2014_06_08
Our building peeks from behind the others along Columbia Street.

I'm still not quite in this time zone yet. Jay went into work for the first time after our vacation but I did not need to do anything today. I fear that is exactly what I've done: nothing. There are a lot of things which I could do. I could walk uptown but I'd rather take an afternoon nap. I am nervous to do the latter as that may prolong my feelings of jet-lag. I should probably stay up until regular bedtime.

If I were more ambitious, I'd wax the truck. I could, at least, wash and put away the luggage. Though, rather than continue thinking of all the things I could do, I think I'll have a beer.

Columbia Street at 4:40 PM

This was the view when I walked out of the A&N Department Store on Columbia Street in the afternoon yesterday. Well, it does look as though it was evening but that's only because of the season. The roads were wet from the rain which also points out it is now January in this part of British Columbia. I cropped the image in order for it to act as my Facebook cover photo.

Columbia Street

Today, I decided I liked it enough to paste it here as well. (Additionally, as with all of my blog photos, if clicked it'll open at Flickr.) My new Nexus 5 cell phone is not known for having a particularly great camera, but I can say without reservation that it takes better low light shots than the phone it replaced.

Quite a Blaze

#NewWest Fire

I'd be remiss if I did not enter facts about the fire which occurred in downtown New Westminster today.

Upon waking up, we saw the fire from the balcony. Columbia Street was closed off for most all the day while fire crews extinguished the stubborn blaze. It made me a little sad. It is rather a strange feeling having a building that's 110 years old disappear overnight. Although there are new buildings rising along the downtown New West corridor, having something so old and with such history go up in smoke feels odd. Perhaps it brought forward our own mortality. I feel sorrow for the businesses lost although I never frequented them. Loss is always sad nevertheless.

StrEAT Food

I love it when Columbia Street, the downtown drag of New Westminster, is closed. (The Pattullo Bridge is also closed for maintenance today as an additional bonus.) Today, is the first Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest in front of our building.

Street Food

It's now about half over running from 3:00 to 9:00. Good work to whomever thought of the idea; it seems packed! We walked the road between 4th and 6th Street. but didn't buy any food. I have to say it's a nice view from my balcony. The music is a bit loud and not especially a favourite. I can, however, crack open one of my own 650 ml oatmeal stouts and enjoy the continuing sunny weather right here from the apartment.

It's Summer. What's On This Weekend?

Show and Shine

I'd say the primary event of the day was having my students write their final examinations. That officially brings to an end my weekend COMM 0005 class at the downtown campus.

I did make it home in time for a little of my city's Show & Shine antique car show. I like seeing Columbia Street full of people when the cars are all parked. By all appearances, it was a great turn out.

We, in the Lower Mainland of BC, try to cram a whole year-full of outdoor events into ten or fewer weeks of summer. That, of course, insures there's something going on just about every weekend between Victoria and Labour Days. In fact, generally many things are taking place at the same time.

At last, for the remainder of the Saturdays and Sundays, I'll be free to participate in a few of them as my class is finished.
