The Wearable Drama: A Trilogy in Three Short Acts

My relationship with Google’s wrist-borne hardware has devolved into an abusive cycle of misplaced optimism and premature electronic mortality. Averaging a fresh smartwatch every two years is not a badge of tech-enthusiast honor; it is a damning indictment of a company using its early adopters as unpaid beta testers. The original Pixel Watch set a low bar by surrendering after a mere 22 months, only to be succeeded by the Pixel Watch 2, which I naïvely trusted to manage the simple task of surviving a standard daily wear cycle.

Another Watch Bites the Dust

Foolish me. On Wednesday, the heart rate monitoring temporarily stopped functioning, delivering a subtle prelude to the impending collapse. Prompted by a subsequent desire to test the device further and actually use the Always-On Display, I embarked on a brief experiment to see if the two-year-old lithium cell could handle an evening of passive monitoring. I was actively trying to rationalize keeping the aluminum slab and glass out of pure, unyielding pragmatism. The watch responded with a dramatic midnight suicide. I woke up at 1:00 AM to a pitch-black screen, no optical green sensors, and an ominous red thermometer icon warning me that the internal thermal cutoffs had triggered a terminal lockout loop.

Once I realized it was unequivocally dead, I was finally liberated from my own cautiousness. Its thermal meltdown won. So, a Lemongrass-colour banded Pixel Watch 4 is now en route via Amazon. I give it until the spring of 2028 before it, too, succumbs to the threat of spontaneous combustion.

Strike Up the Bands

I've a couple of extra metal watch bands for my Pixel Watch. I'd been wearing the original rubbery silicone one. It was beige but it must've come into contact with some chemical I handled because some sections took on a greenish hue. I decided a multi-coloured, eight-pack on Amazon would be fine for $2 each. The picture shows the new white ones. I have a variety of other choices including purple.
Got a Half Dozen Watch Bands
Oh, I downloaded this face the other week too. I like how it looks. A purely digital screen makes more sense though because the hands can sometime cover information. For example, when I want to see my heart rate it might be ten minutes to the hour. The calories-burned or kilometers-walked might be what I want to see at quarter past.  I've grown used to it, so I'll keep this face on the watch.  Yet, I might change the colours right after I publish today's entry.

We All Need a Little Work

This Morning's Walk
During a morning walk, I noticed this reno on a 'heritage' house in my neighbhourhood. We all need a little work now and then, don't we?

My new reno hobby is trying to get back into a little better shape. I'm sorry if I put similar material in this blog but hey, wait a minute! This is primarily a personal journal and I mostly write in this space for my future self. Documenting my own life comes naturally to me and I never say anything here that I wouldn't share with a public group. So no apologies are necessary. I guess I've been Canadian for a long time now.

Anyhow, I changed up my walking route today. I'm trying to spend an hour walking at least three times a week. We live on a hill, actually, my city is completely a hill. So, I can get my heart rate pumping within a few meters of the front door. However, I don't think I'd have nearly as much motivation if it weren't for my Fitbit statistics. I'll put today's walk stats here again. If I can burn an extra 600 calories by just walking then I can definitely garner a deficit for the day.  Here are some stats from my time out today:

Getting Some Exercise While Charging the Car

I thought I might as well kill two birds with one stone this morning.

I wanted to do some walking to get my heart rate up. I have been trying to get in three or four hours a week of walking in moderate and vigorous zones. I now enjoy spending a few minutes in peak too. In addition, my car had charge of just 66%.  So, it made perfect sense to drive up to Queen's Park.
  Bits of My Morning
I sort of thought it might take one hour to walk around the circumference of the park. I knew that my car would get to my usual charge of 80-85% in less than a half hour on the DC fast chargers. Still I decided to give it a try and let the car get more of a charge than I usually put in. When driving around town and taking short trips, the maximum isn't necessary and might actually be a tiny bit stressful on an EV battery that isn't traveling far.
  Walk Around the Park
I'd never tried to walk on the path I did today. My goal is to keep in Fitbit's Active Zone for about a hour per day. Surprisingly, I found it only took 36 minutes to complete that path! My car had reached 90% of a full charge. Hum, and I hadn't completed my whole hour.

Then, I remember that it could still get a bit of exercise if I let my car reach its maximum at the slower Level 2 chargers at our City Hall. That building is only a 10-minute walk up a very steep hill from our apartment. So, I parked, plugged, and walked down the hill. One hour later, I got a notification my car was fully charged.
  Unusual to Charge to 100%
I got in another few minutes of hard exercise when walking up to collect my EV.

Queen's Park Neighborhood in New Westminster

New Westminster, British Columbia

I have begun exercising again by walking uptown on a regular basis.  I enjoy my various routes and find seeing real streets preferable to the inside of a gym.  I enjoy saying, "Good morning," to other folks out for a walk and seeing the children and pets accompanying them.

The arrow on the image from Google Earth shows the building in which we live.  This is in the area called downtown New Westminster.  The front door of our apartment building is at an elevation of about 120 ft about the river.

The circle on the image is the Queen's Park neighborhood and is referred to as uptown.  This area is a primary location I walk for exercise.  Much of the land in the red circle is between 250 and 350 feet above the river.  So, a stroll through sought-after homes on the heritage streets is quite a physical workout for me.  There are many historic houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  It also boasts a lot of mature green spaces.  Queen's Park, itself, is 75-acres and to the right-side of the red circle.

Today, I walked up Third Street and returned primarily via Fourth Street.  I generally like to take a walk of one hour.  I was quick today and I had to add a bit of extra walking near our building on Carnarvon Street.  The whole trip took me 56 minutes.  I walked a little over four kilometers and burned 575 calories.

Here are a six randomly-selected houses that I passed along my way today.

Documenting Oneself for Oneself

Yesterday, my sister Laurie, messaged to ask how my Ozempic journey was going. For someone who takes a lot of pleasure documenting personal activities, my GLP-1 story has been a bit muted here.  It's just an injection that I take on Saturdays and there's not a whole lot to continually comment on.  But here goes ...

First, I started my beginning month at the suggested 0.25 mg per week on July 6th. Right from the third day, my food intake was affected.  I was not as hungry and decided I required a whole lot less.  It felt weird getting full after having so little.  Unlike others, I have had very few digestion related problems when taking it.

Subsequently, I moved to the 0.50 mg dose with the same pen on the fifth week.  Still I had no harsh gastrointestinal issues.  I did read that an uptake in fiber is good, so I returned to using psyllium husk powder daily.  I may have had a headache the day after my first dose at the slightly-increased level, but it could've been something quite unrelated.

Next, I will finish my second month on Ozempic this weekend.  I have lost some weight but I decided to only weigh myself on the same days that I take my injection. Interestingly, I have discovered that my Bluetooth bathroom scales can tell me a whole lot of things other than pounds or kilos.  I saw a decrease in my BMI but not a reduction in muscle mass.  To help avoid that I did buy protein power and now drink 30 grams per day since starting this process.

I am having some blood work next week and I have set up a doctor's appointment for the week after.  We can talk about whether I need to move to the standard 1 mg dose or simply stay at the maintenance level for a prolonged period.

My real goal for starting Ozempic was to reduce my A1c level because I noticed this spring it had crept up to a 6.2.  I'd like to reduce that to 5.6.  In addition, continuing on Ozempic seems to have provoked me into thinking more seriously about my excess weight and the detrimental affects of carrying it around.  Looking back, the week the doctor wrote my prescription I weighed 102 kilograms on the clinic's scales.  (That's almost 225 lbs for those metrically-challenged among you.)  Right now, I envision my ideal weight should be 80 or maybe even 75 kg!

Back to Exercising

My sister also asked me whether I was getting any exercise.

I think the few kilograms that I have already shed are helping to prompt me to be more active.  This morning, I felt especially happy to start walking uptown.  I will do that on a regular basis again.  You see, I live in downtown New Westminster, BC.  I'm lucky in not needing a gym membership.  Simply carrying my present weight to the uptown business district is a workout.  The rise in elevation, from our building's front door, is nearly equivalent to a 21-storey building.

I've owned Pixel watches for a couple of years but never really looked into all the Fitbit integration aspects.  All of today's graphics are just screenshots saved from my morning walk.   How cool to turn something as pragmatic as exercise into a nerdy, numerical pursuit.  Look at all the data that I can generate in an hour!  This will help make sure I keep doing so.

Access to Personal Stats

Walk Through Pier Park

This morning, I wanted to do a short walk to the other end of downtown and back.  My new watch notices when I'm walking along and asks me if I want to mark it and keep track of the outing as exercise.  This is exactly what I was doing so I tapped, YES, on the watch face.  It seems as though I'll be marking individual sessions, in addition to checking on my daily steps (kilometers).

When back at home, I opened the Fitbit app on my phone.  Of course, I do not bother paying for a subscription and just use the basic information provided by the Google Pixel watch.  I don't want coaching.  And I certainly don't need video tips!  I'm not in training; I just like access to daily stats.  I find all the free information sufficient for my needs.

However, when the app was open, I noticed I had a single day, in 2024, when I walked more than 20,000 steps.  Under normal circumstances, I aim for 8,000.  I wondered what I'd done on February 19th to merit a special badge.

February 22nd?

Because I blog religiously, I knew I could look up what occurred on that date.  I discovered this was when Jay, his sisters, and I were in Bangkok, Thailand.  We took many trips on the SkyTrains and by rail, but we did a whole lot of walking as well. The accomplishment that Fitbit was talking about, happened on the day we visited the Big Buddha Statue at Wat Paknam.  I do like having things documented.

A Day w/ 20,000 Steps?

Its Warranty Had Expired

This afternoon, I'm waiting for the Amazon guy. He should be bringing my replacement Pixel wristwatch soon.

Yesterday, my old watch suddenly showed a white G on the screen and that was all. It tried rebooting a number of times and once I was able to get to some menus but it wasn't behaving in a normal way. I let it sit on its charger for a few hours and, then, nothing. Nothing was visible on the watch face and it wouldn't turn on. It couldn't even be reset. That was majorly disappointing.
  Pixel Watch 1 - Dead!
Initially, I thought I'd never own a connected smartwatch. However, since spending time with the first version of the Pixel, I have learned to like it a lot.  It's often much easier than digging my phone out of a pocket.  I found notifications much more intuitive when reading on my wrist.

Most important, I hadn't realized just how I addicted I've become to the health-monitoring provided by the its Fitbit integration. I do more than just track steps. I monitor my pulse rates and check on my sleep stats every morning.  As soon as I realized I didn't have access to that data, I felt sad.  I was and continue to be without important and necessary information.

I immediately ordered a replacement through Amazon last night. Delivery is promised for today and I'm waiting impatiently.

Day 3 - Ketchikan, Alaska

Day 3 - Ketchikan, AK
We had to set the clocks an hour earlier last night because we are on Alaskan time. So, we were able to sleep a little extra. Jay and I sat at the table on the Lido for breakfast. The ceiling to floor window was facing away from the city of Ketchikan. The view above was a pleasant way to start a pleasant day.

Day 3 - Ketchikan, AK

Our only efforts today including walking around one of my favourite cruise ports in Alaska. It advertises itself as the first stop in Alaska because it isn't far from the Canadian border with British Columbia. I love how compact the old downtown is and how easy it is to walk around town. Ketchikan is also known for salmon and rain. The annual rainfall amounts to around 12 feet per year. However as you can see, we lucked out with another beautiful day in this small city.

Day 3 - Ketchikan, AK

Jay and I walked leisurely around but easily put on about 6.5 km as reported on Fitbit.  It really was splendid weather.  We noticed the ms Statendam pull into the city too.  Holland America puts a large 'We Heart Alaska' signs on their ships.  It wouldn't be a visit to Ketchikan without a walk to Creek Street, the former red-light district with its picturesque buildings.

Our cruise left at five on the dot.  We're heading now to our second of two cities on this short itinerary.  We'll be in Prince Rupert, British Columbia tomorrow morning at 7:00 am.

Just 50 Meters from the House

Day 119 - I got my weekly results from Fitbit. I knew that we'd walked a lot every day in Bangkok and it did say we averaged more than 10 KM per day. It's sometimes hard to access Bangkok's BTS Skytrain but we became pretty good at finding the elevator or at least escalators at our frequently-used stations. So I was surprised to see that we also walked up the equivalent of 10 flights per day.

I didn't really need a device to tell we were walking more than usual. My legs, ankles, and even the bottoms of my feet hurt. I'm very happy that we started early retirement ten years ago. It's not an exaggeration to say that one should travel while one's still physically capable.
Day 119 - Mini Green Tangerines
So today, other than putter around the yard, I did little. I walked less than three kilometers! There are always plants to check. For example, Jay harvested my handful of tiny, little greenish tangerines from a tree in the yard. He had to knock them down with a stick with a homemade hook on the end.

Wearable Tech

Day 92 - I got the first version of the Google Pixel Watch when it was released. I have grown to like it. My only big gripe is the battery life. I know it takes a lot of juice to power the OS. Yet, this is a watch that tracks sleep data, so it's not as easy as a phone to simply stick it on a charger overnight.

I had tried the built-in ECG on occasion. It wasn't until today I saw how easy it was to save a PDF in order to show a healthcare professional. I'm sure I'd freak out if it gave any other result than normal. I used to think I had horrible sleep until I noticed the Fitbit overlay data saying what's normal for my sex and age. Wearable tech is interesting.

A Nice Day for Nothing Much

Day 85 - Evening Arrives
Day 85 - This picture proves that another day is finishing. I snapped this image from the house in Minuwangoda. The pink/purple sky must have made for a very pretty sunset by the beach.

Last night I didn't sleep very well. After many hours on a road trip, one can still feel like one's moving when going to bed. It took a long time to get to sleep. Yet, my Fitbit app rated my sleep as pretty normal for me.

Today was another Poya Full Moon holiday here. We didn't leave the house.  It was pretty warm but the recent high humidity has abated.  It was sort of a perfect day with very little to show for it.

Dubai's Global Village

Location of 'Global Village'
Day 40 - Big is the adjective that rules in this city.  This evening we went to 'Global Village' for the first time.  I guess it has quite a long history, starting in 1997, the year after we left work in Dubai.  The present location dates from this millennium, I read.

Global Village is a type of seasonal retail, food, and entertainment fairground.  The permanent structures operate just from October through April.  It is divided into regions of the world where one can sample food or shop.  There are also some carnival rides and a water feature.  Prominent musical artists have performed at the site.

It seems very popular as there were thousands of guests on a Monday evening!  A surprising number of locals and families from the Gulf were strolling the grounds that open at 4:00 pm and close at midnight.

We took RTA bus #103 from Union Station. The comfortable transit takes around an hour as it is really in the middle of an area that was desert.

So, we had another day with more than eight kilometers of walking.  I don't need to check my Fitbit app as I can tell by how my legs feel.  We took the 9:00 pm bus back to Union Station and caught the Red Line to BurJuman, our stop.  So many cars are on the roads at all hours nowadays.
