A Dozen Years of Freedom

Today marks the exact twelfth anniversary of Jay stepping out of the workforce for an early retirement. On Sunday, October 19, 2014, he returned home from his very last shift after thirteen years of dedicated service at Covenant House Vancouver. Waiting on the counter to greet him was a celebratory cheesecake, vibrant balloons, and cards congratulating him on the milestone. That sweet afternoon welcome officially marked the end of his employment and inaugurated his new life as a gentleman of leisure.

2014_10_19
My own turn arrived exactly three days later, on Wednesday, October 22nd. As my final cohort of students concentrated on their term-end examination at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, fellow instructors quietly entered the room bearing a farewell cake and a few mementos to remember my seventeen years teaching at BCIT, marking my definitive final exit from classrooms and computer labs.
  Cake

That coordinated double-play in October of 2014 allowed both of us to chart our own unconventional course and step into permanent liberty. That was the week when decades of commutes, early morning alarms, lesson plans, and punch clocks simply vanished into thin air. The deliberate objective was always to cast off domestic predictable schedules entirely in favour of international departures, long rail journeys, and unhurried exploration across an open calendar. Twelve years down the road, looking back on that joint leap confirms that escaping early was sheer strategic brilliance. These past dozen years have undeniably been some of the premier years of our lives.

Celebrating Ten Years of Retirement!

This photo is featured in 'my eJournal and images' today. This wasn't the first time though.  It was first published here exactly ten years ago tomorrow.
  2014_10_19
I surprised Jay with a few balloons and a small store-bought cheesecake in 2014. That was the final time he put in full a day of official work at Covenant House Vancouver.

He beat me into retirement, but I wasn't far behind. Three days after blowing up those balloons, I gave my final final exam at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.  This was the last batch of students I ever taught.  The following photo was taken on the BCIT library steps after a work assignment exactly ten years ago this Sunday.

During the years since the photos, this decade of our lives has been great, including some of our most amazing years ever!

What's the Difference Between Routines and a Rut?

We got back to one of our regular routines. Today, we drove to the Langley Farm Market for fruit and vegetables. We occasionally buy these items at supermarkets but for years we've filled the majority of our needs at Langley Farm Market on Canada Way.
  Fruit and Vegetable Market

This activity means we're back in summer mode. The whole idea of a routine is interesting. Many people stick to a routine most of the time. To me, that observation seems a little sad.  How do these folks differentiate the big block of time called life?

Jay and I have now been retired for ten years! This situation has allowed us to live different lives during each of them. We have the common thread of our summer and four of five months of brand new exploration.  Our travels teach us new things about our destinations, the world, and ourselves.

We'll Soon Start Our 10th Post-Retirement Winter

I just had a chance to talk to our neighbour in the elevator.  He asked whether we'd be heading off for our winter soon.  I was happy to report to him that we're leaving on Halloween this year.  His next question was whether we go to the same place every year.  That was an easy answer with a definite, "No!"

I decided to update and summarize, for myself, our winters since November 2014.  We have lived for around five months away in warm places for seven winters now.  One winter we remained at home in Canada in preparation for Jay's open-heart surgery.  Although we started out living for five months at a single location, we later adapted plans to include several locations during the same winter.

Below, I'll list the places we've lived, the short trips during those winters, and a few possible ideas for new adventures.

Our Retirement Winter Stays

Bali, Indonesia (2 months)
Buenos Aires, Argentina (3 months)
Colombo, Sri Lanka (6 months) (2 visits)
Dubai, UAE (1 1/2 months)

Mazatlan, Mexico (2 months)
Penang, Malaysia (3 months)
Playa del Carmen, Mexico (3 months)
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (5 months)
Siem Reap, Cambodia (2 months)

Day 115

Last winter, we stayed three months in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  I didn't expect to find a little slice of Europe in South America.  Travel is a fantastic way to understand the world in which we all live.  If more people made an effort to learn about others, the entire world would be a much better place.

Life Happens So Quickly

It was a great day with a beautiful blue sky and a temperature of 24C. There are a great many reasons for me to be happy today, including my marriage, health, and experiences. They would have to also include the photo below.

I used the same picture in my eJournal and images in the past.  In fact, it showed up here exactly nine years ago today.  So this is another happy anniversary of its arrival!  The document was a confirmation letter that I got via post.  It stated that commencing the very next month, I'd start receiving pension benefits. That was nine years ago already and, so far, they've not missed a payment. LOL.

Getting Closer!

Another Totally Unnecessary Effort

There's absolutely no need for me to maintain my current resume.

In a few months, it'll be nine whole years since I last stepped into a classroom.  I've been collecting a pension for my former participation at the British Columbia Institute of Technology for just as long.  Furthermore and more importantly, I have absolutely no intention of looking for any sort of job.

Resume of Dennis Hurd Resume of Dennis Hurd

Yet, keeping my resume up-to-date was a habit for so long that I still enjoy keeping an active copy.  Yeah, that doesn't make much sense but I never let something like that interfere with my actions.

One amazing aspect of the document itself is that it was first created on an IBM-compatible PC in Saudi Arabia in the mid-1980s.  My resume was originally formatted in WordStar and assuredly was copied to WordPerfect as well.  Over the ensuing 40 years, its word processor changed numerous times yet the original keystrokes were simply copied from one format to the next.  Of course, the content increased as well.

The images above are what it looks like at the moment.  Today's version replaces the odd page formatting shown below.  What was I thinking back in the 2010s?

About 2,200 Miles South

It seems like we retired so long ago!

This photo is dated April 20, 2015.  It was near the end of our first winter away from British Columbia. We stayed in a rental place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for five months. It was a brilliant introduction on how to escape from the copious winter rain of Metro-Vancouver.
The Winter We Spent in PV

Yet, we were no strangers to PV as we had first discovered it on a 2008 Carnival cruise from San Diego.  We returned in 2010 on a trip that included time in the city of Guadalajara too.   Then again, in 2012, we travelled to Puerto Vallarta during a school break in February.  That was the time we met Tim and his friends, Rita and Silas, during our one-week visit.  Therefore, after we no longer held jobs in 2014, we knew it'd be an easy winter location for us to live.  And it was.

From the time of this picture until today, we've not been back.   Our avoidance wasn't part of a plan; we simply didn't find an opportunity.  We very much liked the vibe of this part of Mexico even though it has now been over eight years since we've set foot there.  That is something we will soon change.

We had been looking for something to do for Jay's birthday week in September.  Today, I noticed relatively inexpensive, return flights from YVR to PVR on Expedia.  From here, connecting flights are never convenient and end up wasting a whole day.  Yet, it takes only around five hours to fly directly. On the 8th of September, Jay will be able to celebrate turning a year older in a special location.

Few Tourists Get a Chance to Live Locally

Choosing is Difficult

Day 9 - Jay and I have always been lucky in that we've had ample time for travel.  We have been travelling and seeing bits of the world since the mid-1980s.  Our situation always allowed for months off at a time.  Having been a teacher offered me many blessings but the yearly extended blocks of free time counted as one of the most important.  Geography was important during those initial years too because working in the Middle East meant that Europe, Africa, and Asia were all within relatively easy reach.

Our work schedules in Canada were luckily flexible.  However, simultaneous retirements in 2014 have proved perfect as we began to completely own every minute of our time.  That's why we did it early.  I find it hard to wrap my head around the fact that later in 2023 will mark our ninth year of complete freedom!

VRBO Kitchen

Our methods for travel have evolved.  Of course, we used to try to squeeze a lot of ground into each trip.  I can remember flights from Canada when we tried to 'do' a half dozen European countries in three weeks.  Likewise, we visited a few countries in much less time than was actually required.  Indonesia comes to mind, as each of its islands is like a different country with a unique culture.  Now, we can make ample time.  We actually choose a place to really live each winter.  With three or four months under our belts, we can approach travel with little stress and it becomes more of a learning experience.

Even this small trip of one month is perfect for learning about smaller areas such as the French Riviera.  We can take our time and soak up how the locals do things.  We have time to fill the cupboards and fridge with food from the supermarket, just as locals do.  Many tourists rely on eating out exclusively.  That stems from the fact most tourists do not have the necessary time nor the required facilities to eat locally.  Fortunately, we always ensure we do.

So Much (Cheap) Wine, So Little Time!

Retired for Eight Years!

Supermarket cakes aren't usually allowed in our apartment.  However, I took advantage of a special situation to buy it while Jay was working out at the gym.
  Banned Item
This is the anniversary of Jay's last day of employment and the day he began early retirement. It occurred on a Sunday that year.  He beat me by three days, as the last day I ever taught a class was on Wednesday, October 22nd.

Those two special days were in 2014, so we've now been retired for eight years.  Many of the days since have been some of our best ones ever!  This surely merits a $5 Walmart black forest cake.

Perpetual Summer Travel Poster

craiyon_123442_perpetual_summer_travel_poster_nbsp_I bought a new pair of Wrangler® shorts at the uptown Walmart this morning.

Of course, there are many benefits to being Canadian snowbirds.  That describes those of us who, upon retirement, have chosen to spend the cold and nasty part of each year someplace warmer and where the weather's less offensive.

One of the useful benefits of leaving for winter is that we can keep our closet full of mostly summer clothing.  I expect to wear my new purchase when we're in the southern hemisphere this winter.

This is the very first time I've used an AI-generated image in my blog post.  I discovered craiyon.com after reading quite a bit about DALL-E 2.  This is a free-to-use sibling that allows the public to get a taste of creating images from text captions for a wide range of concepts expressible in natural language.

Assuredly, the quality and breadth of what Craiyon can do now is merely a taste of the future.  It amazes me!  Here are just eight examples of what it produced with my small text prompts:

Quick and Efficient

We retired early so as to have more time for ourselves.  There's little excuse not to have errands and chores done quickly and efficiently now.

Hoser

However, that doesn't always seem to be the case.  Our EV would get very dirty in the residential parking spaces under our buildings, so we use a custom car cover when we're gone for an extended period.  We returned from our winter in Asia on April 1st this spring.  We finally got around to washing it and the car today (after more than four months).

Life Can Include Oil Cakes

Day 19 - I just have to stop a moment to consider the good fortune in being able to retire early.

I honestly feel more like a kid again than during the middle sections of my life. Doing what one wants, on one's own terms, is the very definition of being free. Having a mindset of enjoying life's small details helps. Almost everything can take on an air of pleasure or enjoyment. For example, desserts!
  Every Day includes Desserts

I was able to kick off our retirement when 55 years old.  We've chosen to have many different chapters of life by living abroad for five months a year, coinciding with winters in Vancouver.   Currently, we're in Dubai, a city where we spent five years of my teaching career.  It's been thoroughly interesting coming here to witness the changes in life after three decades.

Next, in about ten days, we will fly to Sri Lanka to visit Jay's sisters.  We're expecting to stay three months on that tropical island again.  In March, we'll most probably return through this city and add some time in Istanbul, Turkey on our way home.

All of this is possible only because we bought and own our time now.

Seven Years of Luck

Today, I searched my Flickr account for images with a date of October 22, 2014. That was my final day of teaching at the BC Institute of Technology.

Officially, the date of my early retirement was November 1st, but I choose to celebrate the final day I worked with students.  It seems like a more fitting date to acknowledge the end of a gratifying career.  Staff in our department popped in during class to bid farewell, present a few gifts, and eat a bit of cake.
  The Last Day of Class
Seven isn't really an auspicious anniversary, although it's a lucky number in many cultures.  Nevertheless, I am immensely grateful for having had the chance to close an important chapter of my life at such an opportune time.  Some of the happiest years of my life have occurred during the seven years since that date.

Loperamide

I didn't get far from the apartment today. A little stomach trouble and fever kept me in. It was good to sleep so much, I guess.  I feel fortunate because I didn't have to consider calling in sick as a retiree.  I'm coming up on seven years since I taught a class.

Back for a Visit in November

Last Day on Dubai Creek
Thirty years ago this month, I arrived in the city of Dubai from Manama, Bahrain. I went to teach at a campus of the Higher Colleges of Technology and stayed for five years.

In all the years since then, Jay and I only visited the UAE once. You see, during our second winter of early retirement, in November 2015, we had a five-night stopover on our way to Luxor, Egypt.  So we've already seen the world's tallest buildings, man-made islands, and a few megamalls.

Expo 2020 has been delayed due to the global pandemic.  However, the city is finally throwing its large party from October 1st through March 31st.   So, we have decided to make the Dubai Expo a part of the upcoming winter.  We plan to 'stay put' a little bit longer than during our previous stopover in order to make ample use of free, senior season passes.

Graphics Make Complex Data Easier to Digest

A cool wind was blowing today. That meant during our walk around Moody Park, we noticed a lot of leaves falling from the trees.

That observation, in turn, forced us to think a bit about what will happen this winter. Save for the year of Jay's heart surgery, we have gone away for winters since early retirement in 2014. It's still not easy planning exactly where we want to, or even can, go.

Jay came across this neat graphic mashup between joinsherpa.com and Air Canada.  Click this static map to visit the site for an up-to-date one.
Presently Not a Lot of the World is Open for Us

This shows where Canadians can visit with absolutely no restrictions.  Many destinations require a valid COVID test.  However, we have never seen a situation where almost all of Asia is completely off-limits.

I Want the Life of Weather Frog

Google's Weather Frog often flies his kite when it's windy. He spends quite a bit of time in a hammock and he sometimes tosses his empty can of, I presume, beer. He takes picnics and does yoga on a mountaintop. The frog sometimes paints pictures, especially at sunset. He writes in a journal and frequently reads books as he was doing here. The guy naps a whole lot.

Hey, wait! That really doesn't sound a lot different than what I do.

Just Taking it Easy at Home

For a moment this afternoon, I had an odd feeling of déjà vu.  I felt a nagging idea that I needed to begin preparing for a new class at BCIT.  For an instant, I had an overwhelming desire to count how much precious free time remained before I needed to complete preparation.  Suddenly, I shook my head and consciously acknowledged I haven't had a group of students since the fall of 2014 when I took early retirement.

Let's see, what else?  Today, I learned that the city's final, bathroom plumbing inspection will take place on Friday, as will the installation of our fixed-glass shower screen.  That should mean, by next week, the remaining paint touch-ups and caulking can be scheduled.  We will still need to wait for several additional weeks to get a door to the washer/drier closet though.  The opening is oddly sized and required we order a custom door.

Lastly, after last week's heatwave, more normal temperatures in Metro-Vancouver have returned.  I have to confide that today's high of only 21°C (less than 70°F) seems cold!  So it is not a coincidence that we are continuing to check on this project in tropical Sri Lanka.  Construction of the Amber Sky apartments will start next month and finish in August of 2024.  We are in contact with the developer to learn more.

Our Long Weekend Starts Now

7th and 6th
It's a Canadian long weekend because Victoria Day is on Monday.

I made this comment on Facebook:
"I like the idea of this long weekend here, even though not much is going on ... and for more than 6 years, every weekend's been a long one for us."

Of course, not much is going on as BC is still taking it slow due to the tough COVID variants we seem to be harbouring.  Yet, the vaccinations have finally picked up speed and restrictions will soon be lessening. The bit in the quote about having six year's worth of long weekends is, of course, in reference to our early retirements which started near the end of 2014.

I was trying to make a joke. However, I really do enjoy a life of relative leisure. Some people seemingly have trouble adjusting to the lack of stress. We are not among them.

Today was an example. We got up at a reasonable hour without the need for an alarm clock. After breakfast and cleaning up, I downloaded our proof of ownership from the BC Land Title Office. I had to include it in a pack of information I scanned for a PDF document and emailed to the New Westminster city hall. We want a building permit for a bathroom renovation. After a bit of time, we drove to get fresh fruit and vegetables and stopped uptown so Jay could buy some grains and bulk items at a natural food store. I parked on the mall roof and met him after taking this photo at 7th and 6th. Most afternoons include a little nap. Today's did. We finished a few little things in the apartment. These activities brought me right up to the point of needing to write a daily blog post. And here it is ...
