Thanksgiving 2025

Today is Thanksgiving in Canada.  We drove towards Richmond at about 3:10 and arrived just a few minutes before our invite timing at Ed and Shinji's.  We were able to do the turkey meal with the folks who've provided a great experience for decades!

Tim and Jiwan arrived right away.  As is usually the case, the hors d'oeuvres filled us up.  Yet, we somehow found enough room to tuck away all the turkey and fixings a bit later.

 

Oh, my it was a great evening and marks the finale of our duck meetings for 2025.  So, this was the opportunity to allow the ducks to winter in Vancouver's West End.  We get back in mid-March and will look forward to heading to Tim and Jiwan's for a meal, perhaps around Easter (or whenever we're all in town).

Our Thanksgiving 2024

Canadian Thanksgiving is now often defined by our trip to Richmond, BC.  Shinji and Ed put on a feast that has become our tradition.  Jay and I got in car at about 3:10 pm but arrived at their place at Dover Crescent early.  This may have been the first time we were invited on the holiday Monday.

Luckily, this year, everybody was in town, so we got to visit with Jiwan and Tim too.  

Canadian Thanksgiving occurs at a perfect time of the year.  It aligns directly with the fall harvest season.  During the past week, Jay and I have noticed enormous high-altitude formations of Canadian geese congregating in Vs and heading out for warmer climes.  We too will be doing something similar in a few weeks. So this special meal helps make a fitting and precious run up to the end of our summers in British Columbia.

After appetizers, we moved to the dining table and ate too much food, as is always the case.  Even though we ate our fill, I don't think we made much of a dent in the turkey.  In fact there was much more food than we managed to stuff down.

The wine continued to flow freely.  As desert, the handcrafted pumpkin pie was excellent.  The specialty chocolate pieces were heavy and delicious.  I'm sure the seat belt on the way home fit a little snugger than when getting there.

Thanksgiving Dinner 2023

 

As is our tradition, we gathered in Richmond at Ed and Shinji's for our Canadian Thanksgiving dinner.  We arrived at the apartment in Richmond a bit before 4:00 pm.  Tim and Jiwan were soon there too.

 

After a large quantity of appetizers, the hosts set the table.  And the meal commenced.  There was a lot of food and talk.

As always, there was little room for dessert.  The pumpkin pie and fancy chocolates were a perfect end to the meal.

It was a pleasant meal with the telling of past and future plans.  Shinji worked hard on creating a fantastic feast.  We were stuffed but managed to exchange the ducks before heading home.  

We're sure that we'll be going to the West End of downtown Vancouver for another meal together in the spring!

Canadian Thanksgiving 2022

As is now our decades-long tradition, we had Shinji's Thanksgiving meal in Richmond.  The celebration in Canada occurs on the second Monday in October.  Many people have their big meal on the weekend, Sundays being the most popular.

The food is always amazing!  It was good to catch up on the news too.

Serendipitously, our event was in Richmond and the 'dinner ducks' needed to fly to the West End of Vancouver.  So, we hope to have at least one more together before we head off for winter in less than six weeks.

Our Thanksgiving 2021

It wouldn't have been Thanksgiving if we'd not had the opportunity to visit the Richmond guys!  We happily went this evening for a Sunday dinner.

Shinji put on his usual amazing feast and we left more stuffed than the main dish.  This year Tim was in Portugal but Jiwan rode out on the SkyTrain and we drove along the Westminster Highway.  After five hours it hardly seemed as though we'd been there at all.  We reluctantly departed at around 9:45 pm.  I had a bit of difficulty getting the car's seatbelt around me.  We dropped Jiwan off at the SkyTrain station in Richmond for a quicker way home.

We are so appreciative of these friends!

Happy Thanksgiving on Sunday!

It was a slightly different Thanksgiving than usual, but we were lucky to maintain a bit of the familiar. We drove to Richmond to see these friends. It is the very first time we've gotten together since we got back in March. 

I can't think of a more beautiful way to meet than at Shinji's traditional feast. During appetizers, we Facetimed with some folks who are usually in attendance. The serving style was a bit different as rather than having everything on the table and passing things around, we filled up our own plates. It tasted as delicious as ever, I might add. 

We did enjoy ourselves and are thankful to have friends with which to share the Canadian Thanksgiving!

 

Canuck Thanksgiving

We made our way to Richmond for Shinji's annual Thanksgiving dinner. They had a special guest from Seattle who we'd not seen in a decade, perhaps longer. The West-End gentlemen were there too. After filling up on the hors d'œuvres, we walked to the dyke along the Fraser River. Shinji was busy in the kitchen doing final prep for the amazing turkey dinner.

We used this opportunity to swap 'the ducks' too. This was our last event of the year as we will leave for the winter in a couple of weeks. The rubber ducks will be spending the dark winter days in downtown Vancouver. We know where our first dinner of the spring will take place!

As always, Thanksgiving and the turkey were nice and this lasting tradition is very special to us. Thank you so much!

Giving Thanks

Having Canadian Thanksgiving with friends in Richmond is a tradition for us.

This evening we went to the land of feral bunnies and had another great big turkey. This year Jiwan was back in Nepal but we did our best to eat his portion as well. The bubbly was especially bubbly this evening.
