I recently read two articles online. They both were scientific highlighting studies of the human brain. The first basically said that human brains don't have a clock to let us know how much time passes. We all know the subjective feelings of time passing at different speeds. When we're bored things go on forever but if we're truly 'into the groove' we don't notice how long we've been at it. The article suggests our perception is mostly about novelty. We notice time changes when we encounter something unknown or we change gears. The second article similarly implied that unique situations were important and that too much routine left people uninspired and uninspiring! Although having many new experiences may not make one happier, it does provide for a more fulfilling and richer life.
I thought a bit about these ideas as we've now been in Mauritius for nearly three weeks. I've found that is just about when a place seems like home during our short, temporary winters abroad. I'm happy that circumstances provide us with many little 'lives' in our lives. The articles suggest that we have a better handle on the passing of time than many folks. They also imply that our plethora of unique experiences may help to keep our brains ready for additional, new adventures!
