I've added these dinners to my journal for a long time. The guys from Richmond arrived by car and, even with traffic, managed to arrive at the originally scheduled timing.
I've mentioned in the past here, probably many times: At our duck dinners, we've never eaten duck. The duck and his companions are yellow and made of rubber. They could float in a bath tub but never do.
These toys sit in little canvas-like bag and signal who must host the next group dinner. They were in the West End for the winter while Jay and I were away. Their very presence is why we were all called to visit to enjoy dinner with the guys. Summer has now begun!
We consumed a lot of Nepali appetizers. After a lot of talking and a little wine, we headed to the table and had rice, pork curry, and kale with collard greens. The latter was fresh from Tim's garden.
After a bit more time we also had a caramel nut spice cake with whipped cream and maple syrup. Tim is a cake master and this time entered ingredients into AI and got back the measurement calculations. So, no person had ever consumed that exact recipe for his delicious cake.
It is great that the days in July are so long. Yet, it surely didn't seem long before it was time to go home. It was well after 9:00 pm though.
The ducks had accomplished the task of getting us together. We rather eagerly accepted them from the hosts. So, until we can figure out a common time for an invitation to New Westminster, the yellow duck and his friends, will be in a bag in our apartment.
As we were heading home on the SkyTrain, Tim posted a group WhatsApp question about how long this tradition had been going on. He seemed to think it started in 2005. And sure enough, after a little investigation, we discovered a date. After a meal together in July of that year, we walked as a group and picked up the initial duck in a dollar shop.
So this month marks the 20th year of duck dinners! Just for fun, I'll repost an image from twenty years ago. It's always good to document the ravages of time. LOL
