I'm on my notebook as my big computer is chugging away trying to put together video to burn to a DVD. I want to get some of the Sri Lankan footage on disc. I do know that the technology of being able to do this type of thing has come a long way. Old 8mm tapes are still aging in my closet. Yet, we bought an HD Panasonic camcorder last year. It saves 1920x1080 video and 5.1 sound onto SD cards. That makes it a breeze to watch on TV as I can pop out the chip and stick it into my PS3. However, sharing AVCHD formatted video is a bit more tricky. I can most easily copy directly onto regular or duel-layer, blank DVD media. Yet these type of discs can only be viewed on a Blu-ray capable player. It seems like I've had the capability for viewing them forever because of my Sony PS3. Though, nobody else we know can read that native format.
So, as is the case this moment, I'm trying to convert to regular mpeg and the standard DVD format. We want to send the video to Jay's brother in New York and back to the family in Sri Lanka.
I see lots of new little devices for capturing video now. Still, making quick use of the results is not easy enough. I suppose direct upload to YouTube is useful but I cannot think in clip form. Making one hour discs is not easy nor are the tools simple enough. I really wish it were more practical as there really is nothing better than re-living the sound and action of a special event or vacation on a wide-screen HDTV. The power of a still image pales by comparison.
