I'm very good at making sure I maintain it. I change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. I change the coolant every two years. I replaced the timing belt at 60,000 and I drive so carefully, I'm still on my original equipment brake pads. In my initial plan, I figured on running it for twelve years. That would have meant it cost $US 1,000 per year plus operating expenses. In my mind, I assumed I would be comfortable in giving it away after a dozen years.
Now my practicality is rearing its ugly head. I cannot think of a legitimate reason to part with the old Ranger yet, although it's already into its thirteenth year. It's still dependable enough for me to not hesitate going on a long journey. It's in far better shape than many used vehicles half its age. So, I cannot really consider buying anything new. Given the state of the economy there may be some deals to be had, but I've been pretty resolute in ignoring that fact.

Still, I can't help but keep an eye out for what's new. I went through my Dodge Caliber stage. I thought they looked nice when first available. I rented one in Las Vegas on a vacation but didn't really like driving it. On a similar no-frills vein, now I'd probably test drive a 2010 KIA Soul, were I in the market. I can't imagine wasting money for a few more years though. I guess my cash will sit in the bank and the interest will allow me to go whole hog for an actual sound system in my next ride!
