Day 033: One simple test to see whether someone is a truly a traveller is their comfort in being near the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. When one is in an unknown location, the basics of food and shelter play an important role in one's activities. Jay and I have never had a problem being at the base of the pyramid. In fact, we thrive down there.
Today, we had to go get provisions and stock the refrigerator.
We'd heard about the Cascavelle Shopping Mall. We passed it at the junction of Highway A3 when we went to Port Louis the other day by bus. We retraced the initial 20 minutes of that route taking the same method of transport.
There's a massive mall expansion project going on nearby. The original part we visited today was an outdoor setup which makes a lot of practical sense in a place with no winter weather. The food court wasn't completely open because we arrived before 10:00 am. We saw a number of interesting shops but our goal was to visit the fairly large supermarket called, Winners.
I said before that we love to visit supermarkets when travelling. Even when the grocery stores are part of a large chain, local differences are notable. One can tell a lot about a culture and its people by seeing what is sold and how a market is organized.
Errands are the stuff of life. Rather than rushing through them, we should embrace and enjoy the experiences. Jay and I did so today. We found our trip took several hours. We had to carry back several very heavy bags with food and merchandise. It was a pleasant way to spend our time and I'm happy I could share it here in my eJournal!
