Day 12 - We have picked a day to go to Kraków. This morning, we headed to the Central Station to buy tickets for an afternoon there next Tuesday. Things are busy and we had to purchase first class tickets rather than second. As I mentioned by message to a friend, it's okay because we get senior discounts being over 60.
As we were walking towards the station at around 10:15 am. We could tell that the Mermaid Parade was going to take place later because we saw a few floats setting up near Centrum.
Riding the Tram to Discover New Parts of Warsaw
After that, we decided to get on trams to see where they went. We've been buying three-day transit passes, so riding the trams is an excellent way for us to get to know the city better. The subway Metro lines are not as helpful as they are underground!
We got off one and walked through a park. It seems that one quarter of the land of Warsaw is public parks. It is simply great feeling like one's way out in the woods within a kilometer or two of the center of the city!
As it was after one o'clock, we found a place to grab some Chinese food. Restaurant food prices in Warsaw are the prices we remember from years ago. Today, Jay and I got more food than we could eat for a total of $US 15.00 with soft drinks.
The Mermaid Parade 2024
We knew that a parade started at 1:00 and finished in the square in Old Town. As I mentioned in a previous blog post, a battling mermaid is a symbol of Warsaw. It comes in form of a myth from several different stories I've seen. She's on the city's coat of arms. The parade is now an annual event with different mermaid floats made by different municipal units. The next seven photos are a selection of my photos taken today.
