Day 4 - We decided to ride the rails today. We bought train tickets yesterday to Leipzig just to visit the city. We've been on European trains before and loved it as a way to go to and from. Jay was interested in the city that Bach, the composer, found his footing. He had an East German pen-pal in the days before the Internet although they lost contact after German reunification.
We enjoyed the compact city center that is just across the street from the enormous train station.
Our tickets were cheaper than the ICE direct train. So, we had to switch trains in a small city called Dessau. Our original tickets showed us returning via another route. However, we ate a little lunch and decided to head back a half hour early. So, we just hopped on a different schedule and returned the same way in the opposite direction.
We enjoyed the pedestrian streets of the old town Leipzig. Europe does people-friendly cities well. It had taken us around three hours to travel south but we still weren't too hungry. I blame our Berlin hotel's excellent breakfast buffets. We walked in a new modern mall as well.
We saw famous churches, felt a bit of the city's energy and vibrancy. I nearly always judge a city by whether I'd like to have an apartment there. It's a personal judgement and I assume I'm pretty easy to please because I most always love new places.
Could we spend most every June in Leipzig?
