This was a usual lunch that Jay and his sisters created. It contains some items that most foreign folks had never heard of ... nor tasted. For example, the bilin fruit sauce reminded me of cranberries. The fruit, however, looks like cucumbers that grow on a tree.
The extensive addition of spices is what sets this apart from Indian food. This island was on spice-trade routes. So many spices are tropical in origin and grow here. For example, if you buy good quality cinnamon, it'll likely have come from Sri Lanka. Some cheaper types are produced in Vietnam though.
Sri Lankan food can be hot because they do use chilis but the combination of other spices is what makes it more of a cuisine than simple food. The portion sizes are large but I can never get enough. It's not a great place to eat when one needs to lose a few kilos.
