Day 19 - Three cruise ships were due in the town of around 650, so we threw down an anchor well outside of the new breakwater. Folks weren't coming here for the local sea-side village. Ancient Olympics are the draw.
We forwent any of the HAL organized trips, and found a €10 round-trip passenger bus. It must have been about 40 kilometers to the sites of Olympia and the modern town bearing the name. That meant we had about two hours to walk the archeological site and two museums. We walked to the ticket booth well inside the park and paid €12 each.
The religious history of the area with buildings such as the Temple of Zuis was interesting. Yet, I found the spot that the modern Olympics torches are lit every four years a primary interest. We surely continue to walk a whole lot during the days of this cruise. Our admission provided entry into two museums at the site.
Just as we were leaving the area back to our waiting bus, it started to sprinkle lightly. We heard thunder and saw lightning. Wow, Zeus still rules the area! We drove back in the rain. As we needed to tender back to our ship, the heavy rain started. We had to tender back out to the Westerdam during a big swell and torrential downpour. Some young Spanish girls were crying and everyone was hanging on tightly and eyeing the life jackets. Phew, that ended up being something to remember too!
