The washer was originally installed when the apartments were built in the late 80's. The old Inglis brand is now known as Whirlpool Canada. We've been using that machine for eighteen years, so I have no complaints. I sort of liked it for the simplicity. There were no electronics involved, just plain old, mechanical switches and dials. By comparison modern machines are all 'fly by wire'.
These apartments have a very small closet-type space for the washer and dryer. Rather than a combination unit, there's a shelf and the drier sits on the top shelf. Yet back in the day, appliances were substantial, even if small. The lid on the washer weighed about eight pounds alone. I know as it had dropped on my fingers before. During this morning's load it got to the final spin cycle, thankfully. I did have to wring out a bit of water from the towels.
Most all washing machines still made by US manufacturers are hulking, full-sized jobs. I simply didn't have the room. And the prices of the few apartment-sized, front-loading models started at a grand! So, we ran up to buy an apartment-sized model which I'd seen at the uptown London Drugs. I got the dolly and brought up the new and made it down to the truck with the old one. The Inglis is in the back now. The replacement RCA has run a few test loads.
So, welcome home, you new little Chinese lightweight.
