We struck out for the “Old City” at 9:15 without a tour. It was approximately 800 meters to the edge of the well-preserved walled Medieval hill. We’d done enough homework to recognize all the historic points and sites, Stout Margaret signalling our entry. We went nearly directly up Toompea Hill and went in the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Of course the place was already packed with the tourists and passengers from the three cruise ships in port today. We walked down to the Lower Old Town and I imagined the Town Hall Square might be busier if the weather were a bit friendlier. Still, it didn’t pour down until we were heading back to the boat.
The ship left at 5:00 and we are heading out into the shipping lanes to arrive in St. Petersburg very early in the morning.
