We've befriended this quasi-community cat. It is not really a street cat, as it is fed by most of the folks on this block. It is tolerated by the neighbourhood dogs. There are several others, which I'd quote as being "regulars". This one was not initially the most friendly, but has turned out to be the most devoted.
Our lifestyle has always made pet ownership difficult. In Canada, we've had a succession of perhaps nearing, ten hamsters. Even a small rodent can add enjoyment to life. It is something to take care of, pamper, and watch. The unfortunate aspect of our choice of small creatures is their short lifespans. Each actually did have a unique personality but even the heartiest of the lot only last around 1000 days. Still, they were the only practical creature we could own. When we left for a month or more at a time, they lived quite happily in the bathtub with oodles of extra goodies.
We see lots of senior couples doting on little dogs here. I guess the snowbird-crowd simply pack them with their bathing suits when heading north each spring. I cannot think this is a possibility for us quite yet. We may be heading to a number of destinations during the next decade of winters. So, for now, we will have to be content with borrowed pets, such as the character in the photo. She stops in numerous times per day. Sometimes for a belly rub, but generally for table scraps.
