We walked to the municipal market to buy fruits and vegetables. With all the bounty, we also picked out a pineapple for two reasons. First, of course, pineapples are cheap and delicious here. We got a rather large, yellowish-skinned one. We paid more than usual, maybe about $US 1.50 for it because it had a good top. That might seem like an odd reason to buy one, especially as local sellers usually ask if one wants to have the green spikes removed when bagging the fruit. Our second reason for buying this particular one was we wanted the top as well.
An empty pot was sitting on our balcony. You see, there are plant-pot holders welded onto our iron railings. Our downstairs neighbours were visiting family in Toronto during the holidays. They had gone a few weeks before we arrived and just got back a few days ago. They had been watering the plants. During their absence, a few plants dried up and died. We cut off the top of today's pineapple as it'll make for a hearty replacement.
In New Westminster, Jay left a pineapple top with two-foot greens. He put it on the balcony so it might get a bit of precipitation during our months away. I'm sure that the freezing weather which they've had up north has killed that one. We'll take good care of this substitute for the next four months.
