Our hostel arranged for a driver for as much of the day as we required. It was the same man who drove us in from the airport back on Tuesday. We wanted to go beyond Giza, to see other examples of the area's pyramids. We got on the road at 8:30 am.
First, we went to Saqqara and saw the Step Pyramid. It was amazing as we could look back to Giza to see where we'd been yesterday and further along to the pyramids we would see later in the day. All are perched up along the hill where the green valley from the Nile waters turns to desert. There was a nice Mitt Rahina Museum at the site.
Next, we went along to Dahshur to see both the Red and Bent Pyramids. Amazingly, we were able to crawl down into the three chambers of the former. We had to back down through the passageway. It was really Indiana Jones stuff. Also at this stop, we walked along the base of the Bent Pyramid. You may have seen pictures. The bottom part slopes steeply but towards the top, the angle become less severe. Training? Accidental? Rush Job?
Lastly, we drove to the Memphis site. The museum has the very large Ramses II statue but it is not standing.
We were going to eat a late lunch on the way home but discovered tourist prices at a tour bus type place and decided to wait until getting back downtown. We finished eating at Kazaz, which has become a favourite place for lunch or dinner, at quarter to three. Tonight will be our final night in Cairo though.
