I often root for the underdog. In the wireless mobile carrier market that was, until recently, quite hard. I signed on to the new-boy-in-town, Wind Mobile as soon as they had a SIM card available to me. That was June of 2010. Actually I had to drive to Burnaby as the New West storefront couldn't get hold of any after three days of waiting.
We do not have the same carriers here as in the United States. Our big three are Rogers, Bell, and Telus and the brands they've bought out. Compared to Europe and the rest of the world, the US has expensive coverage. Yet, compared to some US cell phone plans, Canada's are exorbitant!
I wanted to go with a young, new company and grow with it. My needs are very specialized. I really don't need many minutes at all. In fact, I'd take just data if allowed as I can run Skype on my Nexus One. Still, everything from the website to their advertising made Wind an exciting option. They even went "world view" with their choice of AWS. It is a different standard than the majority of US providers, so when I travel to the States I have to roam on T-mobile (which I hear is going to be gobbled up by US AT&T if allowed by the regulators). I decided to buy an unlocked AWS phone just so I could use their non-compatible network.
I was very satisfied with Wind's network in the Vancouver area. I never had trouble in that regard. Their website is a shambles and their payment processing something out of the abacus age. Still, I would have stayed with them simply as a show of support for them against the consumer-unfriendly Canadian Radio-television Telecommmunications Committee.
Today though, given my needs, I found out that I could save the equivalent of several months of service per year by switching to mobilicity. They were even later to the Vancouver market than Wind Mobile. They are AWS carriers too and they offer 'unlimited data' for a mere additional $10 a month. They are still building out their network, but I do have to say their sales points seem to be everywhere. (Wind oddly chose to partner with Blockbuster Video, a dying company.) I found three mobilicity stores within walking distance the apartment and stopped by one in the next block! Also, this newer company has online website and services which seem light years ahead of their competition.
Wind couldn't give me a deal and thusly couldn't retain me. It's hasta la vista, baby. I'll only return if you make it worth my while, someday.
