I am currently sitting at a table in front of my students. They are feverishly writing midterm examinations. Over the years, the majority of the classes I've taught at BCIT have been four hours long; however, this particular one runs for just three hours. It makes for a improved difference as far as I'm concerned. As well as each class being shorter, there are just three per week. It's a perfect schedule for a winter term, although I must take a small hit on my earnings.
It is times like this, when I look out at the adults sharing their ideas on paper, that I feel humbled. My students are either new Canadians or people who have come here to study technical programs in an English environment. I cannot dismiss the difficulties which are involved in picking up these skills as adults. I'm often amazed by their commitment and progress. Even when I grumble about the level of their work, I'm truly encouraged by their effort.
I feel so lucky to be able to do this job as a living. Since I first taught elementary students in 1981, I've had a chance to connect with some very amazing individuals.
