I wrote my first blog entry about the future Pier Park in New Westminster quite a long time ago. In fact, it was published a few weeks shy of two years ago. That was back when the city first bought the derelict land along the Fraser River.
Things along the river are still progressing slowly. Lots of work had to be done on tearing up sections of the old, rotton piers. It seems as though we've been listening to the sound of pile driving for a very long time now, indeed. Tons of contaminated soil has been removed and new fill added. Many of the steel and concrete underpinning of the new deck has been installed.
Overall, though it surely seems like the progress is slow. Phase One is due to be completed this fall, so I'm sure that things will appear to pick up during the summer months. It's just that I cannot wait to walk across Columbia Street, cross under the parkade, and have a stroll along the riverfront. I wonder when I'll first be able to invite people to a picnic in the future park?
