I received an email message today from a reader who had seen the entry. He shared some information about the very same highway in Saudi Arabia. Clearly, this is one of the reasons I blog about my history; it's nice to get updates. Here's what Yousif had to say:

I just came across your picture *From Snapshot to Monitor* on eJournals. You were sitting in the middle of a highway. I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia, last year I was driving on that same Highway, and it looked pretty much the same...
A couple months ago I drove through the same Highway, and it was surrounded by grass. What once was a desert, became covered with grass.
