Day 4 - The breakfast buffet in our hotel was great. We slept a little late today but there was no harm in that. It really does take one complete day for every time zone change to get acclimated. Vancouver is nine hours behind us but I think travelling in this direction is a little easier than going west.
Our first order of business was to buy train tickets for tomorrow. Our hotel is about three minutes walk from the station. We got some direct tickets to Ljubljana, Slovenia. It is on a Euro train that leaves the Trieste Station at 12:52 and arrives at 3:37 pm. That makes it easier than taking a regional train to the border and hooking up with a slow, local train into Ljubljana. Each ticket was €27.60. A new day will bring new experiences!
We had the whole day today to walk the main city of Trieste. It has a rather compact, old section and the sky was bright and clear for our exploration.
We enjoyed the exercise and easily followed a little drawn map we found but used Google Maps too. Being in the far north of the Adriatic means the city had a Roman past which now includes some theatre ruins right in the city centre. It was beneath a part of a subsequent Jewish quarter from the 17th century.
Coastal cities generally have a historical maritime presence. There was one cruise ship in town today. It shows a continued importance in the port area.
