A different photograph of Menton was somewhat responsible for us being here now! I have our home Windows PC set to display a new, Bing, wallpaper image each morning. I clicked to find out more about this city as it didn't look what I expected for the area. Of course, this colourful section is the old part of town. When we first started researching, we looked for accommodation here. Facts and information about the French Riviera led us to choose Nice as a base.
We did want to visit the place responsible for this lovely one-month stay in the area. So, we walked about five minutes to the train station and bought tickets this morning.
One-way tickets were €5.90, around $US6.30. The train hugs the coast and passes through numerous tunnels. Trains run every half hour between Cannes, France and Ventimiglia, Italy. Nice is our large town approximately in the middle.
After about 20 minutes along the coast, we came to Monaco. Its station is in a tunnel, so we wouldn't have noticed other than my phone offering to roam in a new country. We will spend at least a day there because we have enough time remaining to explore the whole section of this coastline.
Menton is famous for lemons, so of course I had to take an image. We found them in markets along the way. Its old town was a bit of a hike, perhaps several kilometers from the train station. It was pleasant along the water as the temperature was probably around 24°C.
Jay and I hiked up to get a better view of the sea from higher ground. There were numerous stairs, tiny streets, and alleys in the old town. It would sure take a lot of effort to stay high up on the hill. But they made for a perfect vigorous walk.
We descended. By this time, it felt like lunchtime. Although this city is known for heritage Italian cuisine, we stopped for beef shwarma bowls as they looked really good as we passed by. They were larger than the photo shows.
We were back home by 3:30 pm but will undoubtedly head west again from Nice. The train isn't the cheapest way to get from one place to another, but it surely is the easiest, quick, and very scenic.
