Day 78 - As a foreigner, if one knows anything about Argentina it may be about Eva Peron. That is thanks to the international fame of the former first lady. Her death from cancer at a mere 33 years old occurred in 1952. However, new international generations know her through the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice or the subsequent movie starring Antonio Banderas and Madonna.
It was such a gorgeous, warm day that we ended up going to a cemetery! Far from ordinary, the Recoleta Cemetary was the first public one built in Buenos Aires in 1822. The five-hectare site contains pantheons and mausoleums of many prominent figures in Argentine history. More than 90 of them are considered National Historical Monuments.
A thick brick wall surrounds the site but we soon found the main entrance. Our quest was of course to find the last in the secession of resting locations of the body of Evita! It was more than 20 years after her death before she was interred here.
I'm not quite sure when tourists started having to pay, but the charge on the credit card should be around $6 each. It took us some time to locate where María Eva Duarte de Perón rests. However, as you can see in the photos, it was a great day and an interesting cemetery through which to meander.
