Day 51 - We had the day to explore Kuching, but we stayed close to the river. We already walked enough yesterday to make my feet a little tender, but we wanted to return to some of the same areas. It was easy to see from the onset, we would have another wet day. In the tropics, it seldom sustains a downpour throughout the day, but we carried around umbrellas.
We walked to the bazaar on some new and some familiar roads. We didn't pass the Ceylonese Restaurant today, but we did pass through the main, Chinese merchant street. Most of modern Kuching is in the suburbs with the wide highways and houses. I think we nearly always prefer city centres, especially if they are older and have remained intact.
After lunch in the same restaurant as yesterday, we took an Uber ride back to our hotel. We rested. I think Jay is coming down with the flu. That's never fun, but less so when travelling.
After it got dark we went out to see the Waterfront. We'd never seen it at night and I do have to admit that it was a little magical. LED's make cities, architecture, even garden areas much more lovely when the sun has disappeared.
Of the two Eastern Malaysia cities we are visiting, it is hard for me to pick a favourite. Kota Kinabalu was rough and busy; whereas, Kuching is prettier and more laidback. I'm glad we are seeing both on this little break from our vacation.
Oh, there surely is one more thing that has inspired me about the present city in Sarawak. I will assuredly research more about James Brooke, and the dynastic monarchy of the English Brooke family. I had only heard of the White Rajahs and had zero background or information until setting foot in Kuching.
Another great side affect of travel: One learns how much one doesn't know. Many people would benefit from travel for this reason alone!
