During a normal day here, we run across a number of animals. Some are domesticated while others wild. Here are three photos from today's many encounters. Firstly, donkeys are common on our rural, West Bank side of Luxor. Our neighbours, at the far end of the field, have one which voices its displeasure with current circumstances at least a few times a day. It can bray up a storm even though it simply stands around in a green area without any chores at all. Other donkeys here work hard, but seem well treated compared with those we've seen in other countries. Secondly, there are many birds here. We especially like the Egyptian woodpeckers, kingfishers, and a species in which the males have a neat hairdo. Of course, there are hundreds of common finches too. We are lucky to have a pair of doves who call the tree in our garden home, especially during afternoons. They are no longer afraid when we walk around the yard. Lastly, we have two neighbourhood dogs which stop at our gate in the evenings to see if we have any treats. One is happier as he seems to like bread sticks and crunches through them as though they were yummy doggy bones.
