The first iPod line wasn't released until 2001. Okay, to someone who is 18 that's a pretty significant portion of his or her life. Yet, not for me, I proudly brag. I won't spend too much time belabouring the point, but ... sigh ... I did put in a Clarion 8-track player in my 1972 Pinto. Moving from physical media storage, be it vinyl, tape, or CD was quite a change in behaviour. Still for a large number the last 13 years, people have continued to consider the computer files as property. Whether purchased or stolen, the files represented the major way to consume music.
A much more recent change has sort of sneaked up quietly. I spend all my listening time streaming music nowadays. I may have my headphones plugged into my phone or I might be 'Chromecasting' songs to my home theatre system, but the songs are always delivered with no reference to the particular music files. I suppose this is not unlike how we used to listen to FM radio as kids. A big improvement with streaming services is there's no DJ talking over tracks nor annoying advertisements or interruptions.
I first mentioned Songza about a year ago here. It is now just about the only way I listen to music. There are fantastic playlists. There are so many ways to approach a listening experience. It has certainly broadened the number of genres I have at my fingertips.
What a quaint, but weird idea it is to have a collection of music physically stored on little round discs at home!
I'd never find this playlist on local radio. Click it to listen now.
