We were away during May. We didn't get any of the critical reviews or feedback about the movie, Godzilla. As today is a cheap Tuesday, we decided to hit the 1:30 matinee.
I don't completely dismiss the movie but would only give it a 3/10 on the Dennis scale. I knew the background of the creature from the original films, but didn't even know I was supposed to be rooting for Godzilla until the very last sequence of this film. I was a little surprised to see via the Internet how well the film did at the box office on its opening weekend. Ah, but that only indicates pre-release marketing, I guess.
Jay and I had to see it as some scenes were filmed right here in my city of New Westminster. An enormous number of movie and TV shows are filmed in Vancouver and sometimes credits fail to mention our city individually. We often see shooting crews of different productions around town. Exactly a year ago, Godzilla was being filmed about 200 meters from where I'm sitting. From the bottom of Sixth Street, vehicles were strewn about and fires lit up the night. The signs were changed to those of San Francisco.

In the film today there was so much CGI that it was hard to place a lot of the action. From the point the skydivers landed in the city, we saw our local Starbucks on Columbia and many local buildings. This is the same area where parts of Will Smith's I, Robot and Shooter with Marc Wahlberg were filmed.
In fact, something or other is being filmed right as I type. The Burr Theatre, across the street, is now decorated as some sort of wrestling venue. It can be fun to spot local places in many TV shows and Hollywood movies.
