I bet that as most people get older, they become a little more aware of the food they put into their bodies. When, even under the best of scenarios, one has lived more than half a lifetime, every little bit of health advice takes on an added importance.
For years, we've been eating a healthier and healthier diet. We take in a lot of vegetables, much less red meat, and exclusively whole grains. There is very little processed, or even canned, foods in the cupboards now. I thought I'd even switched to a healthy margarine. After all the label boasted that it was non-hydrogenated and stated it was heart-healthy.
A few weeks ago, I was surprised that I'd nearly eaten my way through the tub so quickly. It was at this time that I inspected the label a little more carefully. I couldn't pronounce a few of the ingredients in the listing. In fact, it looked like something more out of a science experiment than a food product.
I didn't buy my replacement tub. Furthermore, I swore off ever buying one for general consumption. I did a lot of Net research on olive oil and bought a bottle of that instead. It's been around for thousands of years and is part of a Mediterranean diet. I now even drizzle a teaspoon on my morning toast and I don't miss the taste of my margarine at all.
