I just went down to put the organic waste in a bin.
We live in one of five 'pilot-project' buildings involved in compost collection in my city of New Westminster. Free little bins were given out earlier in the year and once the system was in place, we were encouraged to empty them into special garbage containers on one of our building's parking levels. The experiment appears to be working, as a great deal of generated waste is being diverted to the special green bins. Of course, we've been separating glass, metal, and plastics from our garbage for years and years. This additional step seems logical and offers us the chance to experience a little warm and fuzzy feeling about helping the waste management system in Metro-Vancouver.
Also, to set the record straight: stuff collected in the little container doesn't smell even after an entire week!
