I'd had a number of digital cameras by the time I bought my first smartphone. So, I wasn't really very impressed by the fact my Nexus One came with a 5 mega-pixel camera.
I was pretty used to always having a standard camera with me. I got into the habit because of my Daily Picture Parade Project. I do have to admit I have really come to appreciate having one built-into my phone. It allows me to instantly upload and send an image whereas I used to have to wait until I was back at a computer. Additionally, I've been spoilt by having GPS information in the picture files. I now don't want to buy a new large-zoom camera until manufacturers also add GPS functionality.
Yesterday, in order to see if I could get more out of my phone camera, I reloaded an app called picplz. I had not signed on to their website for months but decided to give it a try again. Actually, the app probably started out as a feeble copy of iPhone's 'Instagram'. Picplz seems to have been quite improved. The filters are fun but it's gone all gaga in regards to social networking. When I snap a photo it is automatically loaded to my following accounts: flickr, facebook, twitter, foursquare, and a copy is saved in Dropbox. I've declined the uploads to tumblr and posterous. This one-click uploading is probably overkill but it does show how well-connected picplz has become.
Oh, and picplz has also added social networking attributes of its own. One can add friends and search for recently uploaded pictures from one's area. All these are options I couldn't have imagined when I first opened my flickr account in June 2005.
