Technology progresses quite a bit faster than the speed at which we adapt to it.
I was thinking of this today as I'm listening to live radio in Spanish. Audio played on my media server is piped through my home theatre system. I am not ready to really understand any of what's being said as I have only completed the first few lessons on an introductory Spanish CD. I am tuned to a radio station from Puerto Vallarta today simply to hear the sounds of Mexican Spanish. (Well, some songs may be the US Top 40, but the introductions are in Spanish.) I'm following a common path. After all, babies spend their first year of life just listening to their target language.
This is a little amazing. When I sit at an Internet-connected computer, I really am connected to the world. How sad that we usually end up at the same few, tired, old websites! There are stunningly clear photos, text, audio, and video from just about every avenue of human endeavor available via the screen on which you're reading this. Right now, you could click away, do a search, and learn something new. Luckily, the human brain seems to have an infinite capacity. It's a little sad that so many choose to waste that gift playing FarmVille!
