I have come to rely on my Facebook's feed for more than what friends are thinking. Of course, I continue to immediately turn off notifications from every single game app on Facebook. I don't do e-hearts or give a crap about anyone's farm. Hell, let's be honest: I have turned off feeds from several, specific friends as they never contribute anything worth reading.
Still, when I click my home tab, there is an increasing number of feed items waiting for me. They may include ads from BestBuy Canada or news items from one of my local newspapers. The thing is I like having a wide variety of things collected in fewer locations. I signed up for this barrage of information. Of course, I could find it by visiting a number of different sites but consolidation saves a lot of time and effort.
I also like to participate in marking and noting articles and news I find worthy of sharing. At the present time, I have Twitter and delicio.us accounts too. I'm not quite at the point of knowing what to post where. I think I'll eventually find a rhythm though.
I dare you to go to a site like Huffington Post and not participate in the creation of news and opinions. It is my poster child for where social media is evolving. It is an extremely broad paradigm shift, especially for my generation. We grew up as consumers and not contributors to or creators of media. I am so sad that so many of my friends will never grasp the full extent of this fundamental shift in society.
