I've been wanting to revisit Kandy, Sri Lanka. Although it was one of the first places we travelled to in the mid-80s, it has been a very long time since my last visit. Jay may have visited with family more recently, but I'm sure I last went in 2004. That's when the photo was taken.
Sri Lanka has a remarkable variety of geography for one small island. We will go up in the mountains to visit a former capital. In 1592, Kandy became the capital city of the last remaining independent kingdom in Sri Lanka after the coastal regions had been conquered by the Portuguese. There is a great deal of important cultural traditions from the Kandyian era. For example, the most important Buddhist Temple is found there, it's called, Temple of the Tooth. The area is pleasant with a small lake and the city surrounding it.
Some folks come here only for Sri Lankan beaches but I've always been fascinated with the area called the hill country.
We may visit a few things outside of town too because we'll rent a van and driver for the day. For around US$ 60 we start the day at around 6:30 am and come home late in the evening. That way we can visit some places where tea is grown and that's history stretches back to a guy named Lipton. We can stop at a few tourist sites and eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the road.
