Day 51 - As it was Sunday, we figured this would be a good day to visit the neighbourhood of Telmo. One of the famous things to see there is the Market.
We knew it'd be a bit of a walk but we could take two SUBTE lines to get a bit closer. When we started out, we discovered our LINE A was down for maintenance. So we walked to Avenida de Mayo Station on LINE C. Then just two stops later, we emerged at Independencia. That put us much closer but it was still a five or six-block walk along Estados Unidos.
The Telmo Market dates from 1897, and like many public structures from that era, was constructed of wrought iron and glass. We saw the interior portion was very large and had food stalls, restaurants, and even a few antique shops.
We do love visiting this type of market although we were just window shopping today.
One reason we visited on a Sunday, was for the well-known, outdoor antique vendors. We were also not 'in the market' for anything except some exercise in the sunshine. The main activity centered around Plaza Dorrego. There certainly were all manner of goods from old LP records to fancy, antique hardware.
Also, this area had large shops selling art pieces from various parts of the world. We noticed enormous, antique, crystal chandeliers and oversized, ornate furniture. I'm sure that it's famous enough so that when a Hollywood star required a particular piece for one of their real estate purchases, they send a representative to San Telmo. We, however, walked around the more modest sellers.
