Day 44 - If there was a word to describe last night's festivities in Buenos Aires, it would probably have to be UNDERWHELMING.
We'd heard that many folks in BA usher in the new year with family and friends. We also knew some would go out for dinner and some young people might find a nightclub in Palermo.
Still, this city and the surrounding areas are home to fifteen million people! We didn't really think that the transit system would practically shut down in the evening.
We saw a few empty buses. A few taxis were plying the streets but we had no exact address. Jay and I went to get on our subway line and it was shut tight at 9:30 pm.
Our intention had been to go to the neighbourhood of Puerto Madero. However, the streets around our part of the city were pretty empty.
So, we just kept on walking to see what was going on near the obelisk. The answer was much the same. That is about a 20-minute walk from the apartment, so we were back before 10:30.
We did wait it out until midnight by watching music videos in English on an Argentinian TV station. Then, at midnight we realized that there'd be quite a few fireworks right in the parks in front of the Congress. They must have been lit by individuals but it was quite a display. In fact, it went on until well into the night. I just opened the balcony door right now, and although there's a bit of rain this afternoon, I can still hear an occasional firecracker or two.
