Jay and I have been getting flu shots for years. He worked in a shelter for street youth, and I taught classes at a post-secondary institute. We've now been retired for eight years.
Getting vaccinations is essential for oneself but they are perhaps, more importantly, a benefit for all of society. The normal, seasonal flu kills numbers of the old and infirm. In a classroom, I could have passed a virus on to an adult student. Then, they in turn might have passed it on to a family elder. We should think about others' welfare and getting vaccinated is just one small way to do so. This simply is *not* a decision one is making for oneself. The choice affects everyone with which one has contact.
I also had a shot of Pneumovax 23 as my doctor recommended it even though I have a few years to go before I get to age 65.
