Traveling by ship can be the best way to visit particular destinations. You must remember that before the advent of air travel, the primary means of global travel was by water. For millennia, in fact, for most of human history, arriving via a seaport is how tourists arrived at faraway places. However, Jay and I did not start exploring the world by cruise ship until the present millennium had begun.
The publication of yesterday's blog post prompted me to spend a bit of time researching. I wanted to know exactly when and for how many days we were on ocean cruises.
As of this moment, we've been on eight, different cruise adventures spanning eighteen years. The most recent two were just before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. We've spent a total of 110 days onboard ships. We've sailed on three different cruise lines, but over 77% of our total days at sea have been aboard Holland America Lines. A single trip from Vancouver to Australia and New Zealand accounts for well over one-third of our time aboard cruises.
