Let me give you an example: I can always point to where major cities are. If I'm in our apartment in New Westminster, I know that the wall behind my bed is in the direction of Tokyo, or that the closest I could get to Paris would be to walk into the closet with our hot water heater. Knowing the compass points of north, south, east, and west seems necessary to me wherever I am. I feel more relaxed and comfortable knowing my relative location to everything.
This is why Kuala Lumpur is keeping me a bit flummoxed. I'm having a very hard time getting my lay of the land. I am always much quicker in figuring these things out. This city grew around small hills which keep roads from being in any sort of grid. The same highway will run north/south and then snake around to the east or west a bit later. It's difficult for me to put things in relation to the two rivers which meet around a kilometre from this spot. I'm finding it best to keep walking and exploring in an attempt to fill my brain with all the uncharted territory. These four photos were taken north of our apartment in a neighbourhood called Chow Kit.
