Olas Atlas is probably the most famous street in the Romantic Zone. It is not more than four blocks in length and sort of peters out at the upper end because of steep terrain. We knew nothing of its closure for New Year's activities.
There were large screens lit by LED projectors on both ends of a two-block section in front of the Los Arcos Hotel. Huge speakers were set up for a street party. We noticed early on when it was empty and the traffic was being diverted. When returning later, it was packed. The individuals who created the program were brilliant. There was a mix of hits from various decades as well as a few Spanish songs thrown in. It whipped the crowd into an energetic state.
Liquor continued to be sold in the surrounding convenience stores. No area was roped off. Police presence was unnoticeable. Yet, the mood was safe and celebratory. In Vancouver, the regulations and liquor laws would have prevented this party we feel lucky to have attended last night.
