Our existing fridge is one of the original appliances when this building was built. That means it has been chugging along since the 1980's. I had no idea that refrigerator technology had improved so dramatically.
I entered the data on the Energy Star Refrigerator Retirement Savings Calculator and discovered my present old pig costs nearly $200 a year to operate. Considering a new one of equal size will cost less than $50, it makes the decision to buy a new one a little easier. Even if it's five or six years until it pays for itself, I'll know I'm doing my part to cut down on power consumption. Just as importantly, our province's power authority has been used by politicians as a cash-cow for decades, so we will be seeing some steep rises in electricity prices coming down the pike.
