This morning, a tiny finch arrived on the balcony railing and looked pissed. Perhaps, he was angry that I managed to kill the cedar tree by over-watering it. I expect that he was out with his mate searching for a place to build a nest. I hate angry birds, so we went in search of a 5 ft. cedar.The ones for sale at the Home Depot looked a little sickly, so we drove to the Walmart in Queensborough. The garden shop won't really open for business until later in the week, but a helpful customer service representative managed to get the price code. We drove away with one in the back of the truck. It is definitely worth the $18 for the chance to please the finches.
In past years, we've had a number of broods raised here. In fact, in 2010 there was time enough for two complete families with April and July batches. The tree is all set in the big plastic pot now. This is an effort to keep the birds happy.
