I find the process by which we choose vacation destinations rather interesting. It's not as if we actually sit down and draw up a list of locations we'd like to visit. The process may take a few short weeks or many months.
Initially, some vague interests are explored individually. We might look up flights on Expedia or simply see something in the travel section of the newspaper. As we hone in on an area, we begin to discuss those options. A shortlist of possibilities eventually starts to crystallize. Internet resources are checked. More than just general searches are implemented. For example, photos uploaded by Flickr members can be an excellent way of getting the feeling of a place. Google Map's Street View has become an invaluable planning resource as well. Eventually, our library's travel guides are always involved. Suddenly, really without a eureka moment, we pass a point where we just know.
It's still early, but we're starting to think about a plan the first big destination of 2011. The map above is from the website of a bus company; it will give you an idea of an area that is up for consideration.
(I published a listing of recent, blogged vacations last October.)
