I am not sure how the prices got there, however. The per capita GDP on the island is about $US 1,800 compared to the approximate $US 45,000 in Canada. I'm not sure if those housing prices can remain so high given the current economic situation.
Yet, I have vowed to one day see coconut trees when looking out of my living room windows.
To further that dream, I've been interested in the Prince Edmunds Residence since I first discovered it on the Internet last February. It seems this building is modest in scale and a bit away from the traditional luxury condo market. That's exactly what would fit our future needs. I've been in contact with the construction company off and on this spring. (Click here to see a few past entries on the topic.) Even if a winter retreat isn't required at this time, perhaps buying a flat could be considered an investment. I can clearly see coconut trees in the many photos of the building site I recently received by email. Here's one example taken from the main Katunayake International Airport to Colombo road.
