People are hardwired to think linearly. It's hard for us to think beyond
more of the same. This summer, for example, my bank's financial expert kept pestering me to pour cash into their various money market accounts.

He couldn't have cared less about my wants or needs. Even without asking my age or goals, he simply thought I was stupid for continuing to ladder my GIC/CDs. As a species we really cannot contemplate an entire shift in reality. Another example is the member of our condo council who took such pride in locking in a long-term natural gas contract for our building. He did that at the all-time highs earlier in the year. He most assuredly figured he was doing us a favour. Again, assuming the present will continue indefinitely into the future is what we do best.
As far as a moral to the story, I don't think there is one. I am happy I didn't move my cash, and eventually it will be a relief when we can go back to market rates on gas. Crystal balls lie and truly only reflect the things which have already happened.
