We never touch money. Our switch from cash to cards occurred long before COVID-19 cleanliness became a concern. Like most Canadians, we find actual cash much less convenient. We hardly ever see any up close anymore.
Jay is a bit of an eagle-eye. He constantly sees things I'd miss completely. Today, we parked on the roof of the shopping center. As we were leaving Walmart, near our car, he noticed three 5-dollar bills on the ground. Then, next to them, he spotted a 20 and moments later another 50. Only one other car was near and it was parked in a handicapped space. We weren't absolutely sure but assumed the money must have belonged to its owner.
It didn't feel right just taking it. Jay wanted to stick around to see if the owners would come back and he could question if they'd lost anything. The time was only around 11:10 am and we waited and waited. If we left the money under the car's wiper, anybody could have come along to help themselves. If we'd returned the lost notes to customer service, they might have never made it back to the owner. I was a little bored but Jay suggested we wait until at least 11:30.
At around 11:28 a woman and a lady with a walker came to the roof. We could see the younger one was a little distraught and began looking through the contents of the car. Jay went to ask if she'd lost something and she answered they'd misplaced some money. He asked, "How much?" As she immediately said $85, Jay gave her the cash. I appreciate his cheerful willingness to wait.
My only good deed today was capturing a butterfly stuck by our inside pool. The creature was trying to get out through the glass so I cupped it and opened the door to set it free.
