Day 87 - We've been here nearly three months but only visited the Minuwangoda Sunday Market once. A special municipal area sits almost downtown, next to the bus stand. A long time ago it was in the same location but it was just a field where people put up tarps and set out foods and goods. It functions as a sort of a farmers' market but all sorts of things as well as food are sold there. Other communities have similar markets and each can occur on different days of the week.

Going to the Sunday market used to be important, but nowadays Jay's sister has sort of moved to the three major, local supermarket chains. It is easier to buy small quantities in Keells, Cargills, or the Co-op. The selection at the chains is just as good and the prices are the same or even cheaper.

Still, I find it fun to visit the real market on Sunday. A lot of other people also think so because it was super crowded today. Jay and I walked through the place but didn't need vegetables, dried fish, or orchids.
We did pick up several huge sheets of very stiff aluminum foil. It seems these are the inside sections of huge tea sacks. They protect the tea from the humidity and exposure to outside contamination. Once the bags are emptied, the sections are cut out. It seems they also make a smart-looking, easy-to-clean tabletop cover for our gas cooker.

Anyway, the view at the far end of the Sunday Market is better than any supermarket can offer.
