HOW TO LOOK FOR A JOB IN 1996
1) Get a fax modem in order to send out cover letters and resumes.
2) Send copies by Canada Post if you have only a mailing address.
3) Scour the classified ad jobs-section of the newspaper.
4) Spend time making cold calls to see who might be hiring.
5) Keep track of the job hunt process in a notebook.
It's strange that something, which I did so earnestly at the time, can sound a little humourous after several decades. By the way, my fax to Pitman's Business College on August 11th of that year successfully led to some work. The following was snipped from a copy of my old resume.
Pitman Business College
Curriculum Writer / Teacher
688 - 690 West Hastings Street
Vancouver, BC V6B 1P1
11/96 to 7/97
My company's work included: developing, maintaining, and teaching a course entitled, ENGLISH CONVERSATION FOR BUSINESS. Designed for ESL students, the specialized outline emphasized oral English competency as required in a North American business setting. Discussion questions formed the basis for classes, which included authentic readings from newspapers and periodicals. After completion, the students were prepared for enrollment in regular courses at the former, private college.
After, I started working at the BC Institute of Technology in the fall of 1997 and took early retirement in November of last year.
