I was up early although I didn't have a class today*. Still, I had my scanner plugged in before I even had breakfast. I wanted to get a few school things out of the way. Two former students from my summer courses had emailed for assistance. One needed an academic letter of reference and the other sent some BCIT application materials from a full-time program for my review. It took a while to get these done, but my coffee kept me going until I had time for my oatmeal and toast. One thing about teaching is that the job is never really done. Still, I have a remarkable way of earning a living. Especially at this level, I am a small player in helping many individuals achieve their dreams. Students who qualify through my communications courses, often go on to BCIT career programs. Many of my students are Canadian immigrants or the children of new Canadians. Being able to push them toward their chosen careers seems like an amazing privilege.
* Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in much the same way as our bretheren to the south. Many turkeys are sacrificed and cranberries get crushed. Yet, ours falls on the second Monday in October. The date is, in reality, a lot nearer to the time of bountiful harvests. What crop finishes growing neigh onto December?
